ORTHODONTIC FAQS

Looking for answers about braces, orthodontic treatment, or clear aligners in Beaverton or Salem, Oregon? Dr. Vonny Ngantung and the team at Northwest Orthodontics are here to help. Below are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

GENERAL ORTHODONTIC QUESTIONS

How do you know if you need orthodontic treatment?

It can be difficult to tell if orthodontic treatment is needed, even if teeth appear straight. Issues with bite alignment, jaw positioning, or spacing may not be visible at first glance.

While your general dentist may recommend an orthodontist, Dr. Vonny Ngantung specializes exclusively in braces and orthodontic care in Beaverton and Salem, OR.

We offer a complimentary orthodontic consultation, so you can get expert recommendations with no obligation.

What are the signs of orthodontic problems?

Common signs you or your child may need orthodontic treatment include:

  • Crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth
  • Gaps or spacing between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Teeth that stick out or don’t align properly
  • Jaw shifting or misalignment when biting

If you notice any of these, it’s best to schedule a consultation with a local orthodontist in Beaverton or Salem.

At what age should my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children see an orthodontist by age 7.

Early orthodontic evaluations allow us to detect issues with jaw growth, crowding, or bite alignment and begin early (Phase I) treatment if needed.
Starting early can help avoid more complex treatment later and may reduce the need for tooth extractions.

Can adults get braces or orthodontic treatment?

Absolutely. You are never too old for orthodontic treatment.

As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, you can benefit from adult orthodontics, including braces or clear aligners. In fact, about 30% of our patients are adults, and that number continues to grow.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

Modern orthodontic treatment is more comfortable than ever. With advanced technology like lighter wires and smaller braces, most patients experience only mild discomfort—especially after adjustments.

Any soreness is temporary and can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Can I get braces if I have missing teeth?

Yes. Orthodontic treatment can help properly align your teeth and create space for future dental work, such as implants or bridges.

Braces or aligners can also prevent shifting that may cause long-term dental issues.

QUESTIONS ABOUT ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

What is Phase I (Early Interceptive Treatment) and Phase II treatment?

Phase I (Early Treatment):

  • Typically begins when a child still has baby teeth
  • Focuses on correcting jaw growth, crowding, or bite issues early
  • May include expanders or removable appliances

Phase II (Comprehensive Treatment):

  • Begins when permanent teeth are present
  • Uses braces or aligners to perfect alignment and bite
  • Usually occurs around ages 12–13

What is comprehensive orthodontic treatment?

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment refers to full braces or aligner treatment used to straighten teeth and correct bite issues in teens or adults.

This is the most common type of orthodontic care if early treatment was not needed.

Does every child need a Phase I treatment?

No. Early treatment is only recommended when it will significantly improve future outcomes.

If not needed, we monitor growth with complimentary annual check-ups.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

  • Phase I treatment: typically 9–12 months
  • Full treatment (Phase II or comprehensive): 15–24 months

Treatment time depends on factors such as age, case complexity, and patient compliance.

What is extraction vs. non-extraction treatment?

    • Extraction treatment: Removing teeth to create space
    • Non-extraction treatment: Expanding the jaw or reshaping teeth

Dr. Vonny will evaluate your case and recommend the best approach for long-term results.

How much do braces cost? Do you offer payment plans?

We offer:

  • Flexible payment plans
  • Zero-interest financing options
  • Low or no down payment options
